The Fairies have a saying. "Idle hands are the wand of an evil sorceress". This is doubly true for a girl who is becoming wayward. To go along with Education, learining things, we use Occupation; doing things.
One difference between education and occupation is that we do not explain why we make her do the things we do. This is so that she will not question us. At the age of 5, a girl is not able to understand why she is to do what we ask of her.
Another value of Occupation is that "doing is living". Acitivites that have a coherent theme such as feminine carry these things into her. This is done in such a way that she does not know this is happening so she does not question that part of it
As with Education, Occupation distracts her from herself. That is, it counteracts much of the self-absorbedenss since it takes her thinking away from the "I want" and "I wish" in a more active way than simple learning does. It involves her body doing things that she has to. This engages both her thoughts and her movements and therefore her feelings. It also tires her out a bit so that she does not have any spare energy to put to nefarious uses
Ther other aspect of this is that the activities are guided and commanded by a taskmistress or teacher. This again puts the girl under the control of someone else, which is poison to the self-absorbed and proud, having to submit her will to that of another.
The Occupations that we use is having the girls clean, straighten out and other light housework, dressing and feeding the younger (under 4) girls and things like that. The older ones, about 8 learn how to change diapers and wash clothes. This prepares the girl to be a useful and feminine person as well as lightening the work of others.
Even her playthings, such as dolls and tea party sets, call upon her to do the kinds of things and act in the kinds of ways that will make her a proper young lady able to make use of herself
For the girl with wayward tendencies, this is anathema. It makes her do the things that are contrary to her nature and keeps her from doing those things that are not. This is a kind of chastizement in itself
